Embrace Feedback
Nov 19, 2018
The natural tendency for most people is to want feedback on track and doing well but to avoid feedback when you know you are off track.
For example, when you know that you are off track with your nutrition or workouts there is a tendency to not want to get on the scale, take measurements, or look at your progress with workouts.
My wife has seen this over and over as a dietitian and health coach. People will say they knew they were off track and gaining weight so they just wouldn't look at the scale and the next thing they knew they had gained 50 pounds.
We avoid looking at the results when things are going wrong because it can be tough mentally to handle. There are typically two ways that people respond to negative feedback. Either they get discouraged and quit or they use it as motivation to make adjustments and get back on track.
If you know you are off track one of the best things you can do is get honest real feedback so that you can get back on track. I have been rereading the business book Good to Great and one of the keys in that book that takes businesses from good to great is the willingness to embrace the brutal honest truth but to never lose faith that you can obtain your goal.
It is a bit of a paradox in that you must confront the fact that what you are doing is not working but not lose faith that you can get back on track. This takes an upgrade in mindset for many people in that you need to view things such as your scale weight, tape measurements, or even looking at your finances or business growth as simply feedback that lets you know whether you are on track or need to make an adjustment.
If you are off track wouldn't you rather find out early and adjust instead of waiting until things have spun out of control? This requires the mindset of viewing things as feedback and the willingness to make changes.
When you view things from this perspective you will actually embrace and look forward to more frequent feedback.
