Play Like a Kid Again
Sep 22, 2017
Something we have started doing in our gym every year as part of The Yearly Cycle is something called Play Like a Kid Again Day. This is something we do every Fall. It is a day when our clients come in and play games like hopscotch, double dutch jump rope, and dodgeball.
The Bible tells us that we need to have faith like little children and that the kids actually have all the secrets. We can learn some things from kids.
Just in the area of health and fitness kids have tremendous levels of endurance. It seems that they can run and jump forever. They are also extremely flexible and they can jump off and land from things taller than they are with no problem. I have watched my own kids run miles around the track at 4 years old and not even be tired and jump up and down off of boxes in my gym for hours.
Part of the goal in this play like a kid again day is to help restore these qualities to people because as we age we tend to lose flexibility and endurance, but they can be restored. The goal is restore your ability to play like a kid again so that it restores your youth.
In this article I want to talk about some of the other things we can learn from kids.
1) Kids have fun- Recently I have been teaching a couple of classes of PE to elementary school kids at a local private school. These kids have fun. They love to run, jump, throw things, and just have fun. When was the last time you really had fun? The reason why we do the Play Like a Kid Again Day in the Fall is that it is harvest time. This is meant to be a time of joy. Fall should be a reminder every year to start having fun again if you haven't been doing so.
2) Kids are more present - Kids are very aware of what is going on around them. They are present in the moment and not worried about what other people think, money, or any of the other thing that we tend to worry about.
I have also been teaching a PE to some middle school kids at this same private school. The middle school kids are not very present because they are worried about what everyone else is thinking of them. The young kids are carefree and they just play.
How present are you? Are you worried about the future, stressed about life, worried about what other people think of you, etc? If so then learn from the kids and be present and have fun.
3) Observant - Because kids are more present they are also more observant. They pick up on everything going on around them because they are present and not in their own heads. Kids notice everything.
4) Curious - Kids are curious. They ask a lot of questions. They want to know how things work and they are hungry to figure it out. How curious are you? Do you ask a lot of questions? How hungry are you to grow? Kids love to learn. Are you continually learning?
5) Faith - Kids believe. They believe that anything is possible. We are meant to be this way.
How can you apply these things into your own life? It is the Fall so it is time to focusing on having more fun, being more present, more observant, more curious, and believing that anything is possible.
